These gummies are a healthy alternative for the chewy lollies and jellies that you can buy at the store. They require only a handful of ingredients, are super simple to make, taste delicious and you can create a huge range of different flavours and shapes to keep it interesting for the kids.
We have been making gummies in our home since 2015. I first discovered the concept when I was quitting all refined sugar, but still really felt like I was craving something. I had always been a sweets addict before then and it was very common for me to have a stash of jelly beans and musk sticks in the cupboard to get through the day! (These days, I might have heart failure from a sugar high if I was to attempt musk sticks)
The key ingredient in these gummies is gelatin. Gelatin helps to regulate our metabolism, it has anti-inflammatory properties, strengthens hair and nails, regulates hormones, improves digestion and heals the gut lining.
There are so many variations of this recipe that we have used over the years to change them up, hide in some added goodness or just to experiment with different colours and flavours. Look at the basic recipe below, read the tips and then let your creativity go.
ALL NATURAL GUMMIES:
250ml of fresh juice
3 tablespoons of powdered gelatin
1-2 tablespoons of honey (depending how sweet you like it, plus it will change with the kind of juice you are using)
OPTIONAL EXTRAS: vanilla extract, probiotics or powdered vitamins/minerals or essential oils.
- Pour juice into Thermomix bowl and sprinkle gelatin over the top until it blooms (soaks in) (leave for about 2-3 minutes)
- Add honey and warm up mixture until it has dissolved and been incorporated (2min/speed 2 REV/37DEG) Do not let it boil!
- Add essential oils and extras if your are using them and pour mixture into silicon moulds.
- Leave them to sit on the bench and cool to room temperature before putting into the fridge to set overnight. Silicon moulds are flimsy- I put ours onto a baking tray so they won't spill on the way to the fridge.
- Pop jellies out of the moulds and store in an airtight container in the fridge.
Jellies will keep in the fridge for at least 3-4 weeks, if everyone doesn't get into them before then.
NOTES | TIPS:
* This recipe can be made in the thermomix or a traditional method of the double boiler.
* I usually use fresh fruit or veggie juice cold pressed. Some varieties of store bought juice will work just as well if it is 100% juice.
* If you have fussy little people it will be best to strain your juice otherwise the jelly will have pulp or seeds through it.
* Juice ideas- beetroot, raspberry, watermelon, strawberries, carrots, oranges, lemon, lime, spinach, kale, blueberries, apples, cucumbers ect
* Certain types of fruit juice will not work in this recipe! Pineapple and kiwi fruit have an enzyme that stops the gelatin from ever setting.
* Kombucha adds even more nutrients to your jellies and makes them even healthier. Just add the required amount of kombucha in place of the juice.
* You can change up the liquid component of this recipe with some milk (dairy or non dairy)
* The gummies in the image above have been made using elderberry syrup. The liquid component is made up of 2/3 elderberry syrup and 1/3 water (See our recipe here for DIY Elderberry Syrup)
*We have made a favourite smoothie before and used it in place of the juice to make these jellies too.
* Adding more or less gelatin will change the consistency, or firmness of the jellies. If you like them softer-add less gelatin, if you like them robust and chewy add a little more. The brand of gelatin you are using might make a difference to how much you need too.
* This recipe requires food grade gelatin. There are many different brands that you can buy- but beware of any labelled "hydrolysed gelatin." This is a non-gelling product and your gummies will forever remain as a liquid-not ideal!
* If you are after a colour change in the gummies, use a different juice or add in a powder such as spirulina, beetroot, dragonfruit or raw cacao.
* Adding a food grade essential oil is a good way to boost the immune system and a child friendly way to take essential oils internally. Add your favourite essential oil (safe for ingesting) to change the flavour of your jellies.
* Remember not all essential oils can be taken internally!! If you do not like to take essential oils internally- leave them out of this recipe, they are not a vital step.
